Crochet Heart and Scroll Brooch Pattern

I managed to get round to this quicker than I expected, but here is an update to my previous post on how to crochet an easy love heart brooch. With UK Mother’s Day just around the corner it’s time to get crafting, so here’s a cute little add on to turn your little frilly heart into a classic tattoo style brooch with a scroll.

How to

Make your heart as per instructions – found here.

To make the scroll, use the same or similar weight yarn – these instructions are a basic guide, you will need to make more/fewer rows depending on your yarn.

Each row will have 3 stitches.

Ch 4, 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next 2, ch1, turn.

Decrease over first 2 stitches, increase last stitch (i.e. 2dc in last stitch) ch 1, turn (3)

1 dc in each stitch, ch1 turn (3)

Decrease over first 2 stitches, increase last stitch (i.e. 2dc in last stitch) ch 1, turn (3)

1 dc in each stitch, ch1 turn (3)

Decrease over first 2 stitches, increase last stitch (i.e. 2dc in last stitch) ch 1, turn (3)

1 dc in each stitch, ch1 turn (3)

Ch 2, half treble in 1st stitch, 1dc, 1dc, ch1, turn (3) – this is the centre of the arch, if you want your scroll to be bigger continue more rows as above until you have half the size you want your finished scroll to be, then work this row and continue as below.

1 dc in each stitch, ch1 turn (3)

Increase in first stitch (i.e. 2dc in first stitch), decrease over last two, ch1, turn (3)

1 dc in each stitch, ch1 turn (3)

Increase in first stitch (i.e. 2dc in first stitch), decrease over last two, ch1, turn (3)

1 dc in each stitch, ch1 turn (3)

Increase in first stitch (i.e. 2dc in first stitch), decrease over last two, ch1, turn (3)

As before, if you want your scroll to be bigger, continue these rows until desired sized.

Don’t fasten off

Make 2dc in corner stitch where you finished and continue a row of dc stitches around the edge to neaten off adding 2 stitches into the corners to turn. Fasten off.

To make the tails, you will do these separate and then sew them on.

Ch 4, dc into second ch from hook, half treble in next, treble in next, ch 4, dc into second ch from hook, half treble in next, treble in next. Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing. Make 2 and sew onto each end of your scroll.

Next you will take a contrast thread and stitch in whatever word you like, then attach it to your heart. I sewed mine on just at the edges, through the frill of the heart, being careful only to pick up the backs of the stitches of the scroll so the sewing thread didn’t show on the front. Finished!
