Crochet heart tutorial – brooch and cushion!

This is a super easy and quick little project that is perfect for beginners!

How to

(These are in English terms – for US read dc as sc, and ht as hd)

ch 2, 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn.

2dc, ch 1, turn.

1dc in first stitch from previous row, 2dc in last stitch, ch 1 turn

1dc in each of first 2 stitches, 2 dc in last stitch, ch 1 turn.

Continue in this method of stitching 1 dc in each stitch of a row and 2 dc in the final stitch of that row until you end up with 10 stitches across, ch 1, turn.

1 dc in next 4 stitches, ss into 5th stitch, ch 1 turn. (5)

1 dc in next 3 stitches, decrease over the last 2 stitches, ch 1, turn. (4)

1 dc in next 2 stitches, decrease over last 2 stitches, ch 1 , turn. (3)

1 dc, decrease last 2 stitches, fasten off (2)

With the right side facing you (the ‘hump’ you just made to your right) insert hook into 5th stitch (the slst) and join in thread.

In next stitch along, the 6th stitch across from right on the main triangle you made, sl st, 1 dc in next 4, ch 1, turn. (5)

1 dc in first 3, decrease over last 2, ch 1 turn (4)

1 dc in next 2 stitches, decrease over last 2 stitches, ch 1 , turn. (3)

1 dc, decrease last stitches, fasten off (2)

Make 2 and sew in ends.

With your two love hearts complete, hold them together with wrong sides touching. Insert hook through both layers at the edge in between the two arches at the top and make a slst.

You will work the next stitches through both layers. You are working around the edge so it can be tricky to see where you are stitching but your hook will find the spaces.

1 dc in next 3, 2 dc, 3 dc, 2dc, 2 dc, 1 dc in next 10, 3 dc, 1 dc in next 10, 2 dc, 2 dc, 3 dc, 2 dc, 1 dc in next 3, sl st  into starting sl st, fasten off. (27)

If you want a 3d effect, make sure you stuff it before you finish off this round.

With contrast thread, join in-between the two arches of the heart, slst in next, *skip next, 4 ht in next, sl st in next, repeat from *  sl st join to start, fasten off. Finished.

I added a little sword through mine and wore it between my collar:

If the thought of 2ply terrifies you, fear not; the pattern can apply in any weight. I made the following in Aron with a size 4mm hook. These would make ideal pin cushions or scent bags for gifts, but I like them as oversized brooches too!

You can also super size this to make a cushion! I made the following with double strands of DK yarn.

This was a project to use up yarn scraps, eventually when I get some scrap white yarn I plan to add a scroll through it, but ’till then it makes a neat way to store your knitting needles!

  1. Thanks for any other magnificent article. The place else may just anyone get that type of info in such an ideal
way of writing? I have a presentation next week,
and I’m at the look for such information.
